Paatil chaired the 6th Governing Body Meeting of the North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management in Guwahati. The institute functions under the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the meeting began, the Union Minister virtually inaugurated the newly constructed International Hostel-cum-Guest House of NERIWALM, aimed at strengthening the institute\u2019s infrastructure and academic facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting, the Governing Body reviewed the institute\u2019s achievements, approved important institutional matters and discussed future strategies for improving water and land management in the North Eastern Region. The Annual Report and Audited Accounts for the financial year 2024\u201325 were also approved, while the institute\u2019s progress in research, academic activities and capacity building was appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NERIWALM surpassed its annual training targets by organising 71 training programmes that benefitted more than 2,800 participants. The institute also continued its specialised M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in Water Resource Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Governing Body deliberated on key amendments to the Memorandum of Association (MoA), including conducting Achievement Review Committee assessments every three years instead of five years. It also proposed renaming the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) as the Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) to further strengthen academic governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting reviewed NERIWALM\u2019s growing involvement in externally funded projects, including studies on sustainable irrigation development in Assam, economic impacts of Brahmaputra water diversion, water harvesting planning and traditional water management systems in North East India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major proposal discussed during the meeting was the establishment of an Irrigation Field Laboratory and Demonstration Farm to promote research, field demonstrations and dissemination of advanced irrigation technologies in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Governing Body also considered recommendations regarding scholarship support for M.Tech. and Ph.D. students, faculty development, enhancement of research capabilities and studies related to climate and GIS-based applications in water resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the meeting reviewed findings from an important study on livelihood challenges faced by erosion-affected families in the Brahmaputra Valley and discussed sustainable rehabilitation and livelihood measures for displaced communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the gathering, Union Minister C. R. Paatil emphasised the importance of scientific water management, capacity building and stronger state participation to tackle emerging challenges in the North Eastern Region.
