In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Manu Bhaker achieved in just three days what it took India 44 years to accomplish — securing two individual Olympic medals. Between wrestler KD Jadhav’s bronze in 1952 and tennis player Leander Paes’ bronze in 1996, India only managed to win two individual medals across ten Olympic Games. Bhaker, however, matched this feat in a mere 72 hours at the Paris Olympics.

The young shooter, who emerged as a prodigy but struggled with stage fright in the past, has now firmly established herself among India’s sporting legends. She became the first Indian athlete since independence to win two medals at a single Olympics, earning a bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event with partner Sarabjot Singh, following her individual medal in the same event. The duo, both 22 and hailing from Haryana, defeated South Korea’s Lee Wonho and Oh Ye Jin 16-10 in the bronze medal match.

Looking ahead, Bhaker remains focused on potentially adding a third medal to her collection. She will compete in the 25m pistol event, which she considers her specialty, on August 2nd.

Reflecting on her journey, Bhaker expressed surprise and gratitude, noting the significance of winning two Olympic medals. She acknowledged the support of her coach, family, and a wide range of supporters, including support staff, for their contributions to her success.

Despite a shaky start in the mixed team event, Bhaker’s precise shooting helped steady the team’s performance, a redemption from the disappointment of the Tokyo Olympics, where she failed to qualify for the finals in any of her events. Her experience in Tokyo instilled a deeper respect for the Olympics and fellow athletes like Neeraj Chopra and PV Sindhu, who have proven their mettle on the world stage.

Now, with renewed confidence and support from her coach Jaspal Rana, Bhaker is ready to continue her Olympic journey, aiming for more success and hoping to maintain the love and support of her fans.
