Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, celebrated for his versatile acting and iconic comedic roles that brought joy to three generations, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2025, in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. He was 84. His demise, coinciding with the festive atmosphere of Diwali, has cast a deep shadow of grief over the entire film fraternity and his millions of fans.

The Journey of the Comedy King

Govardhan Asrani, popularly known simply as ‘Asrani’, was born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan. After training at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he debuted in 1967 with the film ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan’. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he appeared in over 400 films, delighting audiences with his masterful comic timing and distinctive style.

The Unforgettable Jailer

While Asrani excelled in negative and character roles, his portrayal of the eccentric Jailer in Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 classic ‘Sholay’ became an immortal character. His famous dialogue, “Hum Angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hain!” (We are jailers from the British era!), is still one of the most quoted lines in Indian cinema. His successful filmography includes classics like ‘Bawarchi’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Chhoti Si Baat’, ‘Khatta Meetha’, ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Malaamal Weekly’, and ‘Dhamaal’. He also contributed significantly to the industry as a director and story writer.

Cause of Death and Final Wish for Privacy

The actor had been suffering from health issues for some time. According to his manager, he was admitted to Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai, due to respiratory problems, and his condition deteriorated after water accumulated in his lungs. He breathed his last at approximately 4 PM on Monday.

In a final, humble request, Asrani had asked his wife, Manju Asrani, not to announce his death publicly and to ensure his final rites were conducted peacefully without any public spectacle. Honouring his wish, the funeral was held quietly at the Santacruz crematorium on Monday evening, attended only by family and close friends.

The Indian film industry has lost a brilliant star. As the comedy king rests in peace, his legacy of laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of his admirers.
