India and Canada held the 7th Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) in New Delhi today, co-chaired by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal and Canada’s Minister for Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development Maninder Sidhu. The meeting marked a fresh phase of engagement to strengthen bilateral economic ties and set a forward-looking agenda for cooperation.
The discussions followed the Joint Statement of 13 October 2025—“Renewing Momentum towards a Stronger Partnership”, which identified trade as the key driver of growth and resilience between the two nations.
Strong Foundation of India–Canada Relations
Both Ministers reaffirmed the deep and long-standing partnership between India and Canada, rooted in shared democratic values, cultural diversity, and strong economic complementarities. They also acknowledged the significant role of the 2.9 million-strong Indian diaspora and more than 427,000 Indian students in Canada, who act as a vital bridge supporting innovation, education, and greater economic cooperation.
Bilateral trade in goods and services reached USD 18.38 billion in 2023, with both sides welcoming the steady rise in two-way investments. The Ministers reiterated their commitment to building an open, transparent, and predictable business environment that supports sustainable and inclusive growth.
Key Areas of Discussion
The Ministerial Dialogue covered several priority areas, including:
- Strengthening bilateral trade and investment
- Enhancing cooperation on nutritional security
- Improving supply chain resilience
- Collaboration in the health sector
- Facilitating investments and easing business processes
The Ministers also reviewed trade policy developments and discussed ways to improve market access, align regulations, and build long-term economic resilience.
Shared Vision for a Stronger Economic Future
Concluding the meeting, both sides expressed a shared commitment to revitalizing the India–Canada economic partnership based on mutual trust and respect. They agreed to turn the day’s constructive discussions into tangible outcomes that support shared prosperity and reflect the growing depth and dynamism of India–Canada relations.
