New Delhi (26 Nov.) : In a tribute to the Chief Architect of the Constitution of India, President Droupadi Murmu unveiled a statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar on the premises of the Supreme Court on the Constitution Day.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal were also present during the ceremony.

The majestic 7-foot-tall statue, positioned on the front lawn and garden within the Supreme Court premises, captures Dr. Ambedkar adorned in a lawyer’s gown, holding a copy of the Constitution in his hand.

The decision to install the statue at the Supreme Court premises emerges from persistent requests made by a group of Ambedkarite lawyers. In December last year, they had also submitted a letter to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud seeking the installation of a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the lawns of the Supreme Court, emphasizing the symbolic importance of such a gesture.

Subsequently, in September 2023, the Supreme Court Arguing Counsel Association (SCACA) also submitted a representation echoing the call for the installation of the statue. Their representation added further weight to the collective voice advocating for the recognition of Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.
